In response to a recent fire incident at a reading hall in central Pune, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated safety inspections across the city’s study halls and libraries. This proactive measure, led by the fire brigade in coordination with PMC officials, aims to improve safety standards and increase awareness among library owners and students. The inspection campaign has already covered several facilities in Sadashiv Peth, with notices issued to those found non-compliant.

The fire that broke out last week in a building in Navi Peth, where a library used by students preparing for UPSC and MPSC exams was affected, highlighted the urgent need for adequate fire safety measures in study halls and libraries in Pune. Fortunately, firefighters managed to control the blaze before it resulted in any injuries.

Following the fire, PMC Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale directed the fire brigade to carry out safety assessments in libraries throughout the city. Libraries in the densely populated educational areas of Sadashiv Peth, Navi Peth, Narayan Peth, and Shaniwar Peth are under close scrutiny, as they serve hundreds of students preparing for competitive exams.

The inspections aim to address key issues such as ensuring fire safety measures, identifying libraries operating without necessary permissions, and addressing complaints related to overcrowding or insufficient safety in these high-demand facilities.

The PMC, along with the fire brigade, is working collaboratively to raise awareness about safety standards among library operators and students. The PMC has instructed its Taxation and Tax Collection Department to apply commercial tax rates to residential properties being used for educational purposes without appropriate permissions.

Library operators and students are reminded to install mandatory fire safety features, comply with permissions, participate in awareness campaigns, and address student concerns. By enhancing safety standards in study halls, PMC aims to protect the well-being of students and reduce risks, reflecting their commitment to a safer environment for Pune’s academic community.
