Hey Pune folks, here’s some eye-opening news for you! It seems like the rate of death at Sassoon General Hospital is a bit on the higher side compared to private hospitals in the area. But that’s not the only issue at hand – the rate of organ donation is also pretty low. In the past 8 years, only 16 brain-dead patients have donated their organs. That’s definitely not enough to meet the demand for organs in the city.

Sassoon Hospital sees a huge number of patients every day, especially those who are critically ill. This could be one of the reasons why the mortality rate is higher there. But when it comes to organ donation, there are a number of factors at play. From the emotional distress of grieving families to medical complexities like hepatitis diagnoses and blood clots in serious cases, there are a lot of hurdles to overcome.

According to sources at Sassoon Hospital, between 2016 and 2024, only 27 brain-dead patients were registered for organ donation, averaging just 4 per year. Out of these, only 16 patients actually donated their organs, amounting to a total of 67 organs. These include kidneys, corneas, livers, and even hearts, many of which were sent outside the city for transplantation.

It’s worth noting that Sassoon Hospital has conducted a total of 28 kidney and 4 liver transplant surgeries so far. While some of these were done using organs donated by brain-dead patients, others were donated by relatives of the patients. The cost of these surgeries at private hospitals can be quite steep, ranging from Rs 6 to Rs 30 lakhs. But at Sassoon Hospital, the costs are much lower, making it a more affordable option for many. However, despite the lower costs, there is still a long waiting list of patients in need of transplants.

It’s clear that there is a pressing need to increase the number of counsellors at the hospital to convince families to consider organ donation. With more awareness and support, we can hopefully see an increase in the number of organ donations in Pune. Let’s work together to make a difference!
