Hey there, nature enthusiasts! Today we have some updates on the long-awaited zoo project in Pimpri-Chinchwad. It seems like progress is being made, but there are still some hurdles to overcome.
According to an official involved in the project, two phases have already been completed, and the tender for the third phase will be out soon. However, it looks like it will be another one and a half years before the landscaping, enrichment, and structural development are finished. So, it seems like we’ll have to wait a bit longer before we can enjoy the zoo in its full glory.
But not everyone is happy about the urban development in the area. A concerned nature and animal lover has raised issues regarding the human-animal conflict that may arise due to urbanization. With about 9,000 animals being rescued each year, there is a lack of space to treat them properly. Many of these animals end up being sent to charitable trusts instead of receiving the care they need.
The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation had submitted a proposal back in 2010 to convert the old snake park into a zoo, and it was approved by the Central Zoo Authority of India in 2016. While work began in the same year, it has been slow progress. Officials have cited reasons such as COVID-19 and labor shortages for the delays.
Currently, the zoo houses reptiles like anacondas, king cobras, turtles, tortoises, and crocodiles. Once completed, it will showcase a total of 188 species of snakes, along with exotic birds and rare flora and fauna from the Western Ghats. It sounds like a dream come true for animal lovers in Pune, but for now, it remains an unfinished project.
That’s all for now, folks! Stay tuned for more updates on the progress of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Zoo.
