Shreya Shah and Lt. General (retd) Manoj Unni recently took the stage in Buenos Aires to represent India at the World Tango Dance Championships. The duo, hailing from Pune, may not have advanced to the semifinals, but they certainly left a lasting impression on the global tango community.

With over 500 couples from more than 50 countries competing, Shreya and Manoj’s score of 6.445 fell just short of the cutoff for the next round. Despite this, they are proud of their performance and grateful for the opportunity to showcase their skills on an international platform.

As the only Indian couple in the competition, Shreya and Manoj garnered significant attention and support from their local tango community in Pune. Their dedication to the art form was evident in the countless hours of practice they put in leading up to the competition.

Both Shreya and Manoj have impressive backgrounds outside of the dance world. Manoj, a former cardiac surgeon and military officer, brought his discipline and precision to the dance floor. Shreya, a master’s degree holder in economics, balanced her responsibilities as a homemaker with her passion for tango.

Reflecting on their experience, Shreya shared, “Dancing alongside participants from around the world was truly exhilarating. We may not have made it to the next round, but we feel proud of what we accomplished as a team.”

Despite not advancing to the semifinals, Shreya and Manoj’s journey to the World Tango Dance Championships was a testament to their dedication, talent, and the growing presence of Indian dancers in the global tango community.
