Hey Pune peeps, did you know that there’s a big gender gap when it comes to sterilization surgeries in the city? Yep, it seems like men are not too keen on going under the knife for this procedure.

According to recent data from the Pune Municipal Corporation’s Health Department, a whopping 5,408 women underwent sterilization surgeries from April to November this year. In comparison, only 237 men went through with the procedure during the same period. That’s a huge difference!

The Health Department had set a target of 12,062 sterilization surgeries for women from April 2022 to March 2023, and they managed to achieve 67% of it with 8,165 women getting sterilized. But when it comes to men, the target was 1,095 surgeries, and only 254 men actually went through with it. Ouch.

Experts believe that the low number of men opting for sterilization surgery could be due to various reasons like lack of information, misconceptions about reduced sexual ability, social stigmas, and a general lack of awareness at the government level.

Dr. Praveen Sonawane from the Family Planning Association of India in Pune pointed out that there are many myths and misunderstandings surrounding sterilization for men. He also suggested that companies should team up with organizations like theirs to raise awareness among male employees.

So, guys, it’s time to break the silence and get informed about your options when it comes to family planning. Don’t let outdated beliefs hold you back from making informed decisions about your health and future. Let’s bridge the gap and make sure everyone has access to the information and resources they need.
