Pune’s Urban Development Hindered: Six Town Planning Schemes Face Delays
Urban development in Pune Metropolitan Region is facing setbacks as the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) announces delays in six proposed town planning schemes. These schemes, covering approximately 1,000 hectares, are awaiting state government approvals and are likely to face further postponement due to the upcoming assembly elections.
The delayed schemes include strategic locations along the anticipated ring road and the Maan-Mhalunge area, which was showcased as a model scheme during the 2019 assembly elections. While a revised proposal for Maan-Mhalunge has been submitted, the other five schemes have been waiting for final approval for over nine months.
The political impact of the upcoming elections may complicate the approval process, leading to significant delays in project implementation. Despite these setbacks, the state government has granted in-principle approval to 15 additional town planning schemes as part of the recently cleared PMRDA budget.
The affected schemes include Maan-Mhalunge, Vadachiwadi, Autunde Handewadi, Manjari Kolwadi, and two schemes in Holkarwadi. Residents in these areas are growing increasingly concerned about the timeline for implementation, with uncertainty surrounding the development process.
Moreover, delays in approvals could postpone the allocation of Central funds for infrastructure development. The Central government has earmarked ₹25 crore for each of the five schemes (excluding Maan-Mhalunge), while the PMRDA has allocated ₹125 crore for these initiatives.
The six affected schemes follow the Gujarat model, allowing landowners to retain 50% of the developed land. However, ongoing approval delays are hindering their development, highlighting the complexities of urban development in Pune amidst political considerations and regulatory processes.
As the PMRDA continues to navigate challenges posed by government coordination, local residents are eagerly awaiting clarity on the timeline for these crucial projects. The delays in these town planning schemes underscore the need for efficient decision-making and coordination to drive urban development in Pune Metropolitan Region.
