Pune’s public transport system is set for some major changes as the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) faces delays in its bus shelter project. With only 100 shelters completed out of the planned 300, there is still a long way to go. To add to the mix, the city’s traffic police have recommended relocating 27 bus stops to ease congestion in key areas.
The challenges faced by PMPML include space constraints at bus stops, leading to a priority-based execution plan. Shelters at less crowded stops may even be relocated to busier locations to maximize their utility. Chief Transport Manager, Dattatray Zende, remains optimistic about completing the project by mid-2025 despite the setbacks.
Meanwhile, the traffic police have identified critical bus stops near key traffic junctions causing congestion. Stops near Karve Road, Paud Road, Ganeshkhind Road, Shivaji Road, and Pune-Solapur Road are among the problem areas. Additional Commissioner of Police, Manoj Patil, highlighted the need to address these issues promptly to improve traffic flow and safety.
Collaborative efforts are underway between the traffic police, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), and PMPML to implement changes swiftly. A detailed relocation plan is being finalized to shift problem bus stops to safer, less congested locations. The importance of timely action is stressed to enhance passenger comfort, traffic flow, safety, and resource optimization.
As Pune looks ahead to improved public transport infrastructure and urban mobility, the successful execution of these initiatives will be crucial. With the joint efforts of all stakeholders, including commuters, the city can look forward to a more efficient and safer public transport system.
