Hey Pune folks, have you noticed the increasing number of vehicles on the roads lately? Well, it seems like the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has taken notice too. In their recent Environment Status Report, it was revealed that the city now has a whopping 38.63 lakh registered vehicles as of July 2024.

The report, which gathered information from various sources including the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board and the Regional Transport Office, highlighted the fact that the number of vehicles in Pune is only continuing to rise. Until July 1st of this year, a total of 1,59,137 vehicles were registered, with the majority being petrol vehicles.

But it’s not all bad news – the report also mentioned that the number of electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid vehicles is on the rise, showing that people are becoming more conscious of their environmental impact. In fact, since the implementation of the Bharat Stage Emission Standards, a total of 8.80 lakh vehicles have been registered.

Dr Rajendra Bhosale, Commissioner of PMC, emphasized the importance of sustainable development in Pune and how the Environment Status Report will help the city in following the Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations.

Some highlights from the report include the decrease in carbon emissions due to electronic buses, the highest air pollution in Shivajinagar, and the presence of various bird species in Pune and its neighboring areas. The report also mentioned that 100% waste treatment is being done in processing plants and that the energy demand in residential areas has been increasing over the last five years.

However, some critics have pointed out that the report is incomplete as it fails to mention the number of vehicles from previous years and does not provide specific details about the types of vehicles registered. Despite this, the report does shed light on the current environmental situation in Pune and sets the stage for future climate action plans for the city.

So, Puneites, it looks like we have some work to do in terms of managing our vehicle population and reducing our carbon footprint. Let’s keep an eye on these developments and work towards a greener, more sustainable future for our beloved city.
