With Pune facing critically low reservoir levels and the upcoming Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj and Sant Tukaram Maharaj Palkhi processions on the horizon, water cuts are being considered by civic authorities. The Khadakwasla Cluster, which supplies water to the city from dams like Temghar, Varasgaon, Panshet, and Khadakwasla, currently holds only 3.58 TMC of water.

The lack of rainfall has led to concerns about the sustainability of water supply in Pune. As millions of devotees are expected to attend the Palkhi procession later this month, officials are urging residents to use water wisely. Discussions about potential water cuts will take place after the procession to help conserve the remaining water.

Some areas in Pune are already experiencing uneven water distribution and low pressure, making the situation more challenging for residents. Reports of unofficial water cuts have also emerged, prompting authorities to focus on stabilizing supply in the most affected regions.

The Khadakwasla Cluster currently has 3.58 TMC of water, while Pune’s daily water requirement is 0.05 TMC or 1470 MLD. The upcoming Palkhi processions are expected to increase the demand for water, putting additional pressure on already strained resources.

To address the water management challenges, officials are working with procession organizers to plan for the increased demand during the Palkhi processions. The decision on water cuts will depend on post-procession discussions and the condition of the reservoirs.

Despite the current water scarcity, there is hope on the horizon as the meteorological department predicts heavy rainfall in the ghats in the coming days. A significant downpour could potentially help replenish the reservoirs and alleviate the need for immediate water cuts, providing some relief to Pune’s water management issues.
