Hey Pune folks, here’s some exciting news for you! The proposal to build a tunnel between Khadakwasla Dam and Phursungi village is finally gaining momentum after being in limbo for the past six months. This tunnel is expected to increase water supply to Pune City and cater to agricultural needs in the region.

The Water Resources Department of the State Government has put together a detailed plan for a 28 km long tunnel, which has already received approval from the Chief Engineer and the Technical Advisory Committee of Maharashtra. The estimated cost of this project is a whopping one and a half thousand crore rupees, but it’s definitely worth it considering the benefits it will bring.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has shown interest in funding this project, with a proposal of Rs 2,200 crore already submitted. Additionally, the department plans to close the existing canal and transfer the vacant space to the Pune Municipal Corporation in exchange for Transferable Development Rights (TDR).

The proposal is currently awaiting final approval from the Cabinet, and with the code of conduct for the Lok Sabha elections now over, a decision is expected to be made during the upcoming cabinet meeting next week. If approved, work on the project could begin soon, although it may take up to three years to complete once started.

The tunnel itself is designed to transport water from Khadakwasla to Phursungi through a ‘D’ shaped tunnel, which will significantly increase the canal’s capacity and save around two and a half TMC of water. This project will not only address water scarcity issues but also help in reducing pollution, leakage, and evaporation.

So Puneites, stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development that could potentially transform water supply in your city!
