Pune, known for its deteriorating roads, is finally getting some much-needed attention from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). The PMC has recently awarded tenders worth ₹16.38 crore for asphalting and repairing city roads. However, there are concerns about the quality of work as the tenders have been awarded at rates 20-35 percent lower than the pre-estimated cost.

Potholes have been a persistent issue in Pune, often caused by shoddy repairs after road digging for various utilities. These quick fixes tend to fail, leading to recurring pothole problems, especially during the monsoon season. Two-wheeler riders are particularly at risk due to uneven roads.

To tackle this issue, the PMC’s Road Department has initiated a tender process for major and minor road repairs. However, the significant cost reductions in these projects have raised questions about the quality of materials and workmanship. Projects such as the Yerawada Post Office to Psychiatric Hospital and the Wagholi Bawdi Road have seen discounts ranging from 18.70 to 35.05 percent.

Despite the lowered rates, the PMC has assured residents that quality will not be compromised. Engineers India Limited (EIL) will conduct inspections to ensure that the work meets the required standards. Aniruddha Pawaskar, Head of the PMC Road Department, stressed the importance of maintaining quality even at reduced rates. He mentioned that every project is inspected by EIL, and no work is approved without their certification.

With these developments, Pune residents can hope for smoother and safer roads in the near future, provided that the contractors uphold their end of the bargain and deliver high-quality work.
