Hey there, folks! Exciting news coming out of the Indapur area of Pune District! A recent rescue operation led by the Pune Forest Department and the RESQ Charitable Trust has uncovered a surprising wildlife discovery. During a mission to save a civet from a well, the team stumbled upon a Eurasian Otter, a species never before seen in the region.
Forest guards and RESQ team members sprang into action when they received an emergency call about a trapped civet. But to their surprise, they found an otter instead! After patiently waiting for six hours, they were able to safely capture the otter using an auto-trap cage.
The otter was then transferred to the Wildlife Transit Treatment Centre in Bavdhan, Pune, where veterinary professionals are currently assessing its condition. This marks the first recorded appearance of the Eurasian Otter in Pune District, making it a significant moment for the area.
Officials are excited about the discovery and are working with the RESQ team to investigate the otter’s origin and habitat. The otter, a male sub-adult, is currently settling in a secure enclosure with a water body and other enrichments to help him feel at home. He is feeding well and displaying healthy behavior, with a full medical evaluation planned once he has fully settled in.
The Eurasian Otter, known for its elusive and nocturnal nature, is a rare sight in India. Its presence in Pune serves as a reminder of the delicate state of wildlife in the country, where habitat disturbance and pollution are threatening the existence of certain species.
Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting wildlife discovery in Pune!
