Exciting news for bird enthusiasts in Pune as a rare sighting of the European Honey Buzzard has been reported at Vetal Tekdi. This is the first time this bird has been spotted not only in Pune but also in Maharashtra, making it a significant event for the local birding community.
The sighting was made by two separate groups of birders who were able to document the sighting on the citizen science platform for birdwatching, eBird. This rare sighting adds to the growing list of unusual bird sightings at Vetal Tekdi this season, including species like Lesser cuckoo, Northern goshawk, Malabar starling, and Hair-crested drongo.
The sighting coincides with the Vetal Tekdi Birding Marathon, an event organized as part of Bird Week in Maharashtra. This week is celebrated to honor the contributions of renowned ornithologists Dr Salim Ali and Maruti Chitampalli, whose birthdays fall on November 12 and November 5 respectively.
Young birder Shamik Parab, who documented the European Honey Buzzard sighting, described it as a rare occurrence that has added excitement to the birding community. The sighting highlights the importance of Vetal Tekdi as a biodiversity hotspot in Pune and emphasizes the need to preserve it as a natural heritage of the city.
Other interesting and uncommon bird sightings in the city last month included Eurasian Hobby, Rusty tailed FC, Blue throated blue FC, Spotted FC, Common Grasshopper Warbler, Common Buzzard, Blue-tailed bee-eater, Black-hooded oriole, and Orphean warbler. Overall, these sightings showcase the rich bird diversity present in Pune and highlight the importance of conserving natural habitats for these avian species.
