Pune, 5th July 2024: The Maharashtra State Agricultural Marketing Board has hit a sweet spot this season by successfully exporting a whopping 3,397 tonnes of mangoes, valued at Rs 55.89 crore, to various countries. These juicy mangoes were shipped from export facility centres in Vashi, Mumbai, and Baramati, Pune.

The Board of Trade revealed that popular varieties such as Hapus from Konkan, Kesar from Marathwada, and Baiganpalli from Karnataka were in high demand and were sent off to destinations like Australia, America, Britain, Europe, and Southeast Asian countries.

India as a whole exports around 25,000 tonnes of mangoes each year, with Maharashtra’s Hapus, Kesar, and Rajapuri leading the pack. Other states also contribute with varieties like Baiganpalli, Himayat, Dasheri, and Chausa. To cater to the global market, the Maharashtra State Agricultural Marketing Board has set up state-of-the-art facility centres for processing and exporting mangoes by sea and air. These exported mangoes must meet stringent quality standards to ensure they are top-notch.

Last year, the Board managed to export 2,200 tonnes of mangoes worth Rs 36 crore. This year, there was a significant increase of 1,197 tonnes in exports. In addition to developed countries, mangoes from Maharashtra also find their way to Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Bangladesh without any processing. Maharashtra alone accounted for 18,000 tonnes of the total 20,000 tonnes of mangoes exported from India last year. It is predicted that India’s total mango exports will hit 25,000 tonnes this year.

Despite the challenges of high air freight rates, exports to developed countries have seen a notable rise this year. Mango growers are benefiting from improved access to international markets due to pre-registration, quality production, and efforts by the Board of Marketing. This positive trend indicates a promising future for increased mango exports, as stated by Sanjay Kadam, Executive Director of the Maharashtra State Board of Agricultural Marketing in Pune.

Here’s a breakdown of mango exports by country:
– England: 1,951 tonnes
– America: 962.9 tonnes
– European Union countries: 259.1 tonnes
– New Zealand: 132.7 tonnes
– Japan: 46.51 tonnes
– Australia: 38.67 tonnes
– South Korea: 5.1 tonnes
– Malaysia: 0.91 tonnes
– South Africa: 0.67 tonnes

The Maharashtra State Agricultural Marketing Board’s successful mango exports are definitely something to celebrate, showcasing the quality and popularity of Indian mangoes on the global stage.
