The scorching heat in Pune is driving up demand for fruit juices, leading to a surge in footfall at fruit juice stalls across the city. This increased demand has also resulted in a spike in the household demand for lemons, causing prices to rise significantly in the wholesale market. In just a week, lemon prices have increased by 10% to 20%, leading to higher retail prices as well.

At the Market Yard wholesale market, traders are reporting a daily influx of 800 to 1,000 sacks of lemons, each containing between 450 to 550 lemons. Last week, wholesale prices ranged from ₹400 to ₹700 per sack, but this week prices have shot up to ₹500 to ₹1,100 per sack, depending on the quality of the lemons.

The majority of lemons are coming from Shrigonda in Ahilya Nagar district and Barshi in Solapur district, with supplies reaching both city retailers and district markets. Last summer, lemon prices reached their peak as demand increased, with supplies coming from Hyderabad and Tamil Nadu. Traders are anticipating further price hikes if the heat continues to rise, so it might be a good idea to stock up on lemons now before prices go even higher.
