Exciting news for the tech industry in Maharashtra as RRP Electronics Chairman Rajendra Chodankar has announced the upcoming operation of the state’s first semiconductor chip manufacturing plant. Scheduled to be operational on 16th September, this Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility in Navi Mumbai is a major milestone for the region.

Chodankar shared this news at the Semiconductor Eco-System Conference organized by the MCCIA in Pune. Semiconductor chips, vital components in electronics, are currently imported from overseas. However, efforts are being made to produce these chips locally, with Maharashtra’s OSAT plant expected to be fully operational in September.

Speaking about the project, Chodankar mentioned that similar facilities exist in Chennai and Gujarat, but this will be the first in Maharashtra. He highlighted the support received from the state government in the form of subsidies and the planned setup in a 45,000-square-foot area. The project aims to create self-employment opportunities by supplying semiconductor wafers from these facilities.

OSAT technology involves the production of semiconductor chips using semiconductor wafers as raw materials. While India lacks the complex foundries needed for manufacturing wafers, efforts are being made to establish such facilities. By reducing dependence on foreign countries by 25%, the Maharashtra plant will pave the way for technology development and the establishment of semiconductor foundries, ultimately boosting employment prospects in the country.

Chodankar also mentioned plans to set up a foundry for developing semiconductor wafers in Talodaya, thanks to support from the state government. With the state’s first semiconductor manufacturing plant set to go operational in September, the tech industry in Maharashtra is poised for significant growth.
