Hey there, folks! If you’ve been keeping up with the latest news, you might have heard about the recent surge in Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases in Maharashtra. Yep, you read that right – the numbers have spiked to 127, and sadly, there’s been another fatality in Pune.

The latest victim, a 56-year-old woman named Mangala Umaji Chavan, passed away at Sassoon General Hospital after battling the condition for nearly two weeks. She first started experiencing weakness and paralysis-like symptoms on January 15 and was eventually transferred to Sassoon Hospital on January 17. Despite receiving intensive care, she tragically succumbed to respiratory arrest and paralysis on January 28.

Now, let’s talk numbers. Out of the 127 GBS cases in Maharashtra, 20 patients are currently on ventilator support. The majority of cases are concentrated in Pune and its surrounding areas, with Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) limits reporting 23 cases, recently merged villages into PMC reporting 73 cases, Pimpri-Chinchwad reporting 13 cases, Pune rural reporting 9 cases, and 9 cases coming from other districts.

The Health Department has officially diagnosed 72 patients with GBS and has been working tirelessly to determine the cause of this outbreak. Stool samples sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) revealed that 21 samples tested positive for norovirus, 5 samples contained the Campylobacter jejuni bacteria, and one cerebrospinal fluid sample tested positive for the Epstein-Barr virus. Blood tests from 200 patients also ruled out infections from Zika, dengue, and chikungunya viruses.

In response to the escalating situation, the Central Government has set up a high-level committee to assess and manage the outbreak in Maharashtra. This committee is expected to provide recommendations for controlling the spread of the syndrome and improving treatment protocols.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story, and remember to stay safe and take care of your health, folks!
