Hey Punekars! Get ready to celebrate Makar Sankranti in style this year, because sesame prices have dropped just in time for the festivities!
With Makar Sankranti approaching on 14th January, the demand for sesame is at an all-time high. Pune is importing 15-20 tons of sesame daily, compared to the usual 5-7 tons during other times of the year. Sesame is coming in from all over Maharashtra and states like Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal.
Unfortunately, the rainy season took a toll on sesame production in India, with only 50% of the sesame being of good quality. But fear not, because Africa and Brazil have stepped in to help out. India has been importing sesame from these countries for processing, which has actually led to a decrease in prices instead of an increase.
Ajit Bora, a sesame trader in Pune, has assured us that there will be a slight increase in prices until the summer sesame arrives in April and May. So stock up on your Tilguls and get ready to enjoy a sweet Makar Sankranti this year!
