As Makar Sankranti approaches on January 14, Pune locals are in for a treat as the price of sesame drops, making the traditional sweet Tilgul more affordable. With an increase in sesame imports from various states in India and global suppliers like Africa and Brazil, the demand for sesame-based sweets is being met despite challenges in domestic production.
During the festival season, Pune sees a surge in daily sesame imports, with the city importing 15-20 tons per day to keep up with the demand. While the rainy season affected domestic sesame production, global imports have helped stabilize prices, leading to a drop in sesame prices and bringing cheer to Punekars.
Looking ahead, sesame prices may experience some fluctuations as the next batch of summer sesame is expected to arrive in April-May. Despite this, Punekars can enjoy their Makar Sankranti celebrations with affordable sesame and Tilgul, thanks to the ample supply of sesame from both local and international sources.
