The tension between Maharashtra and Karnataka reached a boiling point once again as activists from Kannada Rakshak Vedike stopped a Maharashtra State Transport bus in Chitradurga and reportedly slapped the driver for not knowing Kannada. This incident has caused outrage in Maharashtra, leading to retaliatory protests in Pune.
In response to the Chitradurga incident, members of the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) group protested by blackening a Karnataka State Transport bus near Laxminarayan Talkies in Pune. The protesters criticized the Karnataka government for what they deemed as repeated injustices against Marathi-speaking citizens.
Shiv Sena UBT leader Suraj Lokhande condemned the incident in Chitradurga and issued a stern warning to Karnataka authorities. He stated, “Once again, some organizations from Karnataka have assaulted an ST driver simply because he doesn’t know Kannada. Today, we have retaliated by blackening a Karnataka bus in Pune. If this mistreatment of Marathi people continues, we will not tolerate Karnataka buses operating in Pune.”
The border dispute between Maharashtra and Karnataka has been a longstanding issue, with linguistic and political differences often fueling tensions. The recent incident has only worsened the situation, prompting concerns about potential disruptions to transport services between the two states.
Authorities in both Maharashtra and Karnataka are closely monitoring the situation to prevent any further escalation.
