Shiv Sena, once a dominant force in Pune city and district, is now facing challenges as the BJP and NCP have expanded their influence in the region. The party, which previously had two MPs and four MLAs in Pune district, is now struggling to maintain its stronghold.
Shirur, represented by Shivajirao Adhalrao Patil from 2009 to 2019, and Maval, held by Shrirang Barne since 2019, were once strongholds for Shiv Sena. However, with Barne now aligning with Shinde’s Sena and Adhalrao joining Ajit Pawar’s NCP faction, the party’s grip on these constituencies has weakened.
Former Shiv Sena MLAs like Chandrakant Mokate, Mahadev Babar, Vijay Shivtare, and Suresh Gore used to play a significant role in the legislative assembly. The party also had a strong presence in the Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal corporations and led the Zilla Parishad. However, in recent years, its dominance has declined, with factions now only holding on to Kothrud and Purandar.
As the political landscape in Pune continues to evolve, Shiv Sena will need to adapt and strategize to regain its foothold in the region.
