Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan (SOA), a leading private university in Odisha, has teamed up with the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) to boost the lightning detection network in the state. The partnership will cover eight key locations in Odisha, including Bhubaneswar, Balasore, Sambalpur, and more, with a focus on enhancing forecasting capabilities for thunderstorms and lightning.

The main objectives of this collaboration include working with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Bhubaneswar to provide forecasts at the block and Grama Panchayat levels, as well as addressing flash droughts in western Odisha through advanced forecasting techniques. Joint research initiatives will also be a key focus, with SOA and IITM working together on various projects related to lightning and thunderstorm phenomena.

The significance of this partnership lies in the commitment to using scientific research for the benefit of the community. By predicting thunderstorms and lightning more accurately, the aim is to reduce casualties and enhance public awareness about the risks associated with such natural phenomena. Future endeavors will involve integrating the DAMINI network, an app-based lightning monitoring system, with the Odisha State Disaster Management Authority and Krishi Vigyan Kendras to improve early warning systems and mitigate risks in vulnerable regions of the state.

Overall, this collaboration between SOA and IITM highlights the importance of leveraging scientific research to enhance public safety and disaster preparedness in Odisha.
