In a surprising turn of events, students at a college affiliated with Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) have come forward with allegations that they are being denied the option to study Marathi, a language that the university was established to promote. The controversy has erupted at Kasturi Shikshan Sanstha in Shikrapur, where students claim that Marathi is not being given the respect it deserves and is actively discouraged.

A video highlighting the issue has gone viral on social media, sparking widespread criticism and demands for action. In response to the student complaints, the university administration has set up an inquiry committee to look into the matter. The committee has already submitted its findings, which will now be reviewed by the Board of Trustees. The university has promised that appropriate action will be taken in line with the University Act.

Dadabhau Shinkar, a member of the Senate Committee, has taken a stand on the issue by submitting a proposal calling for strict action against the college. He pointed out the lack of full-time principals and professors at many affiliated colleges, which he believes is causing hardship for students. Shinkar has suggested that the affiliation of such colleges should be revoked.

Kalpesh Yadav, the Joint Secretary of Yuva Sena, has also joined the chorus of voices demanding decisive measures. Yadav emphasized the seriousness of not allowing students to study Marathi and warned of potential protests if the college’s affiliation is not revoked.

In response to the growing controversy, SPPU Vice-Chancellor Dr. Suresh Gosavi has stated that the university is aware of the complaint and has already taken steps to investigate the matter. The findings of the committee will be reviewed, and necessary actions will be taken to address the issue.

This incident has once again raised concerns about the oversight and functioning of some of SPPU’s affiliated colleges. Many are calling for stricter measures to ensure that regional languages like Marathi are promoted and respected in the educational system.
