In a heartwarming display of compassion and activism, 100 children from St. Mira’s Primary School in Pune took to the Pune Metro on World Animal Day to advocate for animal rights. The young students, aged 8 to 9, embarked on a journey from Ruby Hall Station to Civil Court Station, armed with colorful placards and powerful slogans.
Their chants of “Birds and animals are our brothers and sisters,” “Save animals, Save Earth,” and “Shoot with a camera, not with guns” resonated with fellow commuters, drawing attention to the cause they hold dear. With World Animal Day coinciding with the anniversary of St. Francis of Assisi, a patron saint of animals, the students found the perfect backdrop to raise awareness for their mission.
Honoring Pune’s own Sadhu Vaswani, a prominent advocate for animal rights, the children urged commuters to join them in a pledge to go meatless on November 25, as a gesture of respect for animals. One student expressed their passionate plea to stop the killing of animals for food and clothing, emphasizing the importance of care, feeding, and love for all living beings.
Principal Ruby Karna highlighted the strategic decision to engage the public in a space like the metro, where people are receptive to messages while waiting for trains. She noted that this initiative not only spreads awareness but also instills values of kindness and compassion in the children, leaving a lasting impact on their understanding of animal rights and vegetarianism.
The children’s enthusiasm and dedication to their cause left a profound impact on the community, encouraging reflection on our relationship with animals and inspiring others to join in creating a more compassionate world for all living beings.
