Pune Airport faced chaos on Wednesday, August 14, when a Sukhoi fighter aircraft made a hard landing, causing major disruptions to the airport’s schedule. The incident occurred during a routine practice session, with the aircraft crashing from a height of eight to ten feet above the runway.

The Air Force took immediate action, closing the runway for 40 minutes to inspect potential damage. This led to the diversion of four flights and delays for several others. The Sukhoi, weighing 18,400 kg with a landing speed of 230 km/h, hit the runway hard during descent, raising concerns about possible damage.

Pune Airport, a base station for the Air Force, regularly hosts Sukhoi practice flights. The Air Force issued a Notice to Airmen, closing the runway for all passenger flights for inspection. This caused significant disruptions, with four flights diverted and seven to eight others delayed by up to one and a half hours.

Despite the hard landing, there were no tyre bursts or major damage. However, minor runway damage like pits or soil erosion could pose risks to other aircraft. The Air Force’s quick response ensured passenger safety was not compromised, despite the inconvenience caused at Pune Airport.
