Hey Pune peeps! If you thought Ganpati celebrations were just about fun and festivities, think again! SWaCH waste pickers in Pune have once again shown their commitment to sustainable celebrations with their “Nirmalya to Nisarga” initiative. This year, over 200 dedicated waste pickers worked tirelessly to collect votive offerings at 46 immersion centers across the city and send them back to nature.

From flowers to durva, these waste pickers made sure that all the offerings were separated for composting during the immersions on the 12th and 17th of September. With the support of volunteers from corporate groups and students, they managed to collect about 125 tons of Nirmalya for composting and segregate up to 34 tons of dry waste. Talk about dedication!

For over 15 years, the “Nirmalya to Nisarga” initiative has been transforming how environmentally conscious citizens in Pune celebrate Ganpati immersions. Waste pickers have collected over 800 tons of Nirmalya separately during Ganpati, ensuring that these offerings return to nature sustainably. And it seems like citizens are taking notice and appreciating their efforts.

One citizen shared how a SWaCH waste picker found and returned her lost phone at the Nirmalya collection point, highlighting the honesty and integrity of these waste pickers. Another citizen mentioned how the waste pickers feel like family, always there to collect waste and help out during celebrations.

Even prominent Ganpati Mandals have recognized the contribution of SWaCH waste pickers, inviting them for Aarti and honoring them for their hard work. Their dedication serves as a reminder that small actions can lead to significant environmental and cultural preservation.

So, next time you celebrate a festival or just go about your day in Pune, remember the efforts of these waste pickers who work tirelessly to keep the city clean and sustainable. Let’s all do our part to support eco-friendly practices and waste segregation year-round. Together, we can make a difference in preserving Pune’s environment during its grandest festivals!
