Hey Pune folks, have you seen the thick layer of toxic foam in the Indrayani River near Alandi? Yup, it’s back! This issue has got environmental activists and local residents fired up once again, pointing fingers at the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board and civic bodies for not doing enough to tackle pollution in the sacred waterway.
According to a local resident of Alandi, the foam disappeared for a few days but made a comeback over the weekend, getting worse as the water flow increased. The Indrayani River is important for the Warkari community, with many visiting the temples in Dehu and Alandi for religious purposes. However, with this foam problem persisting, concerns about contamination are on the rise.
While the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation occasionally sprays chemicals to hide the foam, an environmental activist from the region believes that the real solution lies in addressing pollution along the entire stretch of the river that passes through urban areas. This issue was brought up earlier in July when former Chief Minister Eknath Shinde visited the Alandi temple and promised steps to make the Indrayani river pollution-free.
The state government has initiated a river rejuvenation project, managed by the Pune Metropolitan Regional Development Authority and PCMC, to combat pollution. Despite delays in the tendering process due to state elections, officials are optimistic that the project will help reduce pollution levels. However, concerns persist as untreated sewage continues to flow into the river from the PCMC, according to Prashal Raul of the Green Army.
As activists and residents demand immediate action to address ongoing pollution in the Indrayani River, it’s clear that more needs to be done to protect this sacred waterway. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story!
