The Pune Municipal Corporation’s 24×7 water supply project has hit a roadblock as nearly 300 kilometers of pipeline work remains incomplete after five years. The main issue causing delays is the struggle to obtain timely traffic diversion approvals needed for road digging, slowing down progress significantly.
The project aims to establish a 1,200-kilometer pipeline network to ensure equal water distribution across the city. While some areas have seen progress, work in places like Hadapsar, Solapur Road, and Peth is lagging behind.
Delays in obtaining traffic diversion approvals have been a major hurdle, according to PMC officials. Efforts are being made to improve coordination with the traffic department to speed up the process. However, seasonal restrictions on road digging from May to September have further hampered progress.
Citizens and activists have criticized PMC for its handling of road digging and restoration, with long stretches of dug-up roads causing inconvenience to the public. Poor coordination among PMC departments has only made matters worse.
The project, with an estimated cost of ₹3,000 crore, includes the construction of 103 water storage tanks, laying a 1,200-kilometer pipeline network, and installing nearly 3 lakh water meters. While progress has been made on water meter installation, delays have pushed back the original March 2024 deadline.
Recent reviews of the project have highlighted the need to overcome challenges and accelerate work completion. With ongoing discussions involving PMC officials, Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol, and city MLAs, the focus is on improving coordination and meeting revised timelines.
Despite the setbacks, the 24×7 water supply project has the potential to transform Pune’s water distribution system. By prioritizing inter-departmental cooperation and obtaining timely approvals, PMC can ensure minimal disruption to citizens and fulfill the project’s objectives.
