Hey Pune, it’s a tough time for our city as the death toll due to Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) continues to rise. Just recently, two more patients lost their lives while undergoing treatment, bringing the total number of deaths to 11.
One of the victims was a 26-year-old woman from Nanded City township, who had to be shifted to Navale Hospital due to the high cost of treatment. Her family couldn’t afford the escalating medical bills, which had already crossed ₹3 lakh within just two days of her admission.
Unfortunately, despite receiving three doses of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), the woman, diagnosed with an axonal variant of GBS, passed away on February 18 after 25 days on ventilator support. Her family is devastated by the loss of a bright student with a promising future.
The second fatality was a 37-year-old man from Daund, who was being treated at Sassoon General Hospital. Despite medical intervention, he succumbed to GBS complications on February 17.
As of now, 36 patients with GBS symptoms are in intensive care in Pune, with 16 still on ventilator support. The total number of affected individuals in Pune and surrounding areas stands at 211, with no new cases reported on Wednesday.
Our thoughts are with the families of the victims and all those affected by this devastating illness. Stay safe, Pune.
