The Ujani Dam catchment area, known for its winter migratory birds, has seen a decrease in bird numbers this season due to high water levels. Conservationist Sandip Nagare notes that the birds are scattered due to the elevated water levels, with Flamingos arriving in December and more species expected in February and March as the water recedes. Kumbhargaon, a popular bird-watching spot, has seen a decline in bird activity due to the lack of mudflats.
Recent sightings include the rare Oriental Darter at Kavadi Pat and increased bird activity in Thane Creek near Airoli. Despite the challenges, naturalists believe that as water levels normalize and mudflats reappear, migratory bird numbers will improve in the coming months.
