The Sinhagad Road area in Pune has been hit with a concerning outbreak of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), prompting the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to take action. A large-scale water testing campaign was launched, and the results have revealed some shocking findings. It turns out that the water from municipal supply, private tankers, and RO plants in the area is not safe for drinking, with contaminants such as bacteria and viruses detected in 70 water samples.
The Water Supply Department tested over 1,600 water samples from the municipal supply, and 12 of them were found to be unsafe for drinking due to the presence of Coliform and E. coli bacteria. Private tanker water fared even worse, with 15 out of 18 samples found to be unfit for consumption. The situation is equally alarming with RO water projects, as 23 out of 36 samples were deemed unfit for drinking.
Further testing revealed the presence of Norovirus and Campylobacter jejuni in the water samples. The investigation also found that water from sources like the Nanded well, Nisarga Heights well, and the DSK Vishwa water tank was contaminated with E. coli and coliform bacteria.
The outbreak of GBS in the area has been directly linked to the consumption of contaminated water. The highest number of GBS cases were associated with water from the Nanded Village Well, followed by the municipal water supply. Other sources like Khadakwasla Dam, Vadgaon Budruk Water Purification Center, and the Gram Panchayat supply were also linked to GBS cases.
The situation is indeed concerning, and it is crucial for residents in the Sinhagad Road area to take precautions and avoid consuming water from these contaminated sources. The PMC is working to address the issue and ensure the safety of the local water supply.
