Bird enthusiasts in Pune were in for a treat as a recent bird-watching event at Vetal Tekdi reported a surge in bird sightings. With nearly 140 different species documented between November 5 and November 12, 2024, the event showcased the rich biodiversity of the area.
Participants were thrilled to spot uncommon bird species such as the Eurasian Wryneck, Grey-necked Bunting, and Taiga Flycatcher, along with several raptors like the Eurasian Sparrowhawk and Shaheen Falcon. The event drew over 40 birders who competed for the title of “Vetal Tekdi Birding Champion” by creating checklists and trip reports on the EBird platform.
While the event brought the local birding community together, concerns over the ecosystem’s future loom large. The proposed Balbharti-Paud Phata Road has raised alarms among citizens and conservationists, who fear for the area’s delicate biodiversity.
Despite these challenges, the Vetal Tekdi Bachav Kruti Samiti continues to advocate for the preservation of the hill’s natural beauty. Events like the recent bird-watching extravaganza serve as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts to protect Pune’s avian treasures.
