Pune, known for its rich history and cultural heritage, has recently been in the news for a rather unfortunate incident that took place in Yerawada jail. What started as a minor dispute between two inmates escalated into a violent assault, leaving one inmate seriously injured.

The injured prisoner, identified as Sudhir Gautam Thorat, was attacked by fellow inmates Vicky alias Vivek Rajesh Kharade and Ali Adam Sheikh. The incident occurred in the barracks of Yerawada jail, where Kharade and Sheikh got into an argument with Thorat about his release date. Things quickly spiraled out of control, leading to Kharade and Sheikh physically assaulting Thorat with their hands and legs.

The assault left Thorat with injuries to his ribs and nose, requiring him to be rushed to the hospital for treatment. The prison guards acted swiftly to intervene and provide first aid to Thorat, while the authorities were informed about the incident.

In response to the incident, the Yerawada police have registered a case against Kharade and Sheikh, with prison guard Vishwas Wakade filing a complaint at the Yerawada police station. The police are currently investigating the matter further, with the help of Senior Police Inspector Ravindra Shelke, Crime Branch Inspector Pallavi Meher, and Assistant Police Inspector Vishal Takle.

This incident is not the first of its kind in Yerawada jail, as reports suggest that there have been multiple fights between prisoners in the past. To ensure the safety and security of all inmates, the jail administration has installed CCTV cameras in the premises to monitor any suspicious activities.

As the investigation into this incident continues, it serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by the prison system in maintaining order and discipline among inmates. Let’s hope that such incidents can be prevented in the future, and that all inmates can serve their time peacefully and without harm.
