In a shocking case that has gripped Pune, a 30-year-old man from Warje has been sentenced to 25 years of rigorous imprisonment for the kidnapping and repeated gang rape of two sisters, aged 16 and 14 at the time, back in April 2015. The crime also involved two juveniles who were charged separately by the Juvenile Justice Board and later released on bail.

The convict’s brother, who aided in the crime by providing financial and logistical support, was on the run for nine years until his arrest earlier this year. The main accused, who was 21 at the time of the crime, was found guilty under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and various sections of the Indian Penal Code.

The Special Judge convicted the main accused of aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, kidnapping, gang rape, unnatural offenses, causing hurt, and criminal intimidation. The sentences for these offenses will run concurrently with the 25-year imprisonment.

The prosecution presented 11 witnesses, including the survivors and medical experts, to argue for a severe sentence that would send a strong message to society. The crime was described as heinous and a threat to societal norms, warranting a stringent punishment.

The incident took place when the girls were lured with promises of marriage and abducted by the main accused, his brother, and the two minors on motorcycles. They were found and rescued by police in Solapur district after being assaulted over a month.

The full text of the judgment is yet to be released, but the court’s decision has already sparked conversations about the need for stricter laws and enforcement to protect children and women from such horrific crimes.
