The stalled water channel project in Pune is causing concern for farmers and residents in Indapur taluka as it impacts water levels in Ujani Dam. With rising temperatures and increasing demand for water, questions are being raised about water resource management.
Water from Ujani Dam is crucial for supplying drinking water to Solapur, Pandharpur, and other nearby areas. However, delays in the water channel project have led to the loss of a significant amount of water. Two rounds of water releases have already depleted storage levels by about 12 TMC, with a potential need for an additional 6 TMC release.
Last year, Ujani Dam reached full capacity during the monsoon, but a large portion of the water is classified as dead stock. This remaining usable water is essential for irrigation in Pune and Solapur districts. Despite sufficient rainfall last year, ongoing demands for water releases continue to strain storage levels.
RP More, Executive Engineer of the Ujani Dam Management Department, assured that there has been no excessive water withdrawal from the dam. However, two recent water releases for Solapur city have led to a significant decrease in storage. If the water channel project is not completed soon, further water releases may be necessary, potentially leading to shortages in the upcoming months.
