Hey folks, exciting news coming from Pune! The District Guardian Minister will finally be appointed after the State Cabinet expansion on December 14. It’s been over a week since the announcement, and we’re all eagerly waiting to see who will take on this important role.
But hold on, there’s a twist in the tale. The Canal Committee, responsible for distributing water in the district, won’t be able to hold its meeting until the new minister is in place. This means that water distribution planning will be delayed, causing some concern among the residents.
Speaking of water, the Khadakwasla chain of dams supplies water to Pune, with the PMC demanding a whopping 23.34 TMC water. However, the State Water Resources Department has only granted 12.82 TMC water to the civic body, citing criteria set by the Maharashtra Water Resources Regulatory Authority.
The State Government has been turning a blind eye to the PMC’s demands for the past decade, leaving the city grappling with water shortages. The priority, as decided by the State Government, is to allocate water for drinking purposes first, followed by agriculture and industry needs.
With the monsoon playing truant in recent years, water storage has been a major concern. The Canal Committee usually meets in October to plan water distribution based on storage levels, but this year, the Model Code of Conduct delayed the meeting. Now, with a new government in place, all eyes are on how water distribution will be managed.
The tension between the PMC and the Water Resources Department is also on the rise, with the latter demanding that the former hand over its pumping station. This move could further complicate the water distribution scenario in Pune.
So, stay tuned for more updates on the water situation in Pune as the new District Guardian Minister takes charge and decisions are made regarding water distribution. Let’s hope for a smooth and efficient plan to meet the city’s water needs!
