Hey Pune folks, it looks like the city is facing some serious water allocation issues! With the inclusion of 34 new villages in PMC limits and the rapid urbanization happening, Pune is in dire need of more water from the dam.

PMC is pushing hard for an annual allocation of 23.34 TMC of water from the dam, but the Maharashtra State Government has been dragging its feet on this issue for the past decade. Despite promises made to the people of Pune by various governments, no concrete decision has been taken.

Tensions are running high in Canal Advisory Committee meetings between the Water Resources Department and PMC representatives. While rural leaders are advocating for agricultural needs, urban reps are stressing the importance of securing drinking water for Pune. It’s a classic case of rural vs urban priorities.

PMC has submitted proposals and meeting minutes to the Maharashtra Government, but so far, there has been no follow-up or decisive action. The Water Resources Department has laid out criteria for approving water usage for drinking and non-irrigation industrial purposes, but the city is still waiting for that increased water quota.

And it seems like PMC is already in hot water (pun intended) for exceeding sanctioned water quotas. The Water Resources Department claims that the city is drawing water at a rate of 270 liters per person per day, way above the allocated 155 liters.

To make matters worse, PMC is facing fines for exceeding standard allocations and must fork out more money to the Water Resources Department. It’s a sticky situation, and it remains to be seen if Pune will get the additional water it so desperately needs. Stay tuned for more updates on this water saga in Pune!
