The city of Pune was rocked by a tragic incident on Thursday morning when a woman was killed after being run over by a ready-mix cement tanker in front of Prayeja City in Vadgaon on Sinhagad Road. This is not the first time such accidents have occurred in the area, with reckless driving and drunk drivers often being the cause.
The incident took place around 11 am, with local residents alerting the police immediately. It was later revealed that the victim was a construction worker, adding to the tragedy of the situation. The driver of the tanker managed to escape, leaving behind a shocked and grieving crowd.
The area near Prayeja City is known for its illegal ready-mix cement plants, which have been causing issues for residents for quite some time. Dust and loose gravel on the roads not only lead to air pollution but also pose a risk to commuters, especially children who are suffering from respiratory and eye ailments.
Despite numerous complaints and protests from residents, the authorities have failed to take any action. The nexus between civic officials and plant owners is often blamed for the lack of progress in addressing these issues. Residents have been reaching out to local authorities since 2021, but their pleas seem to have fallen on deaf ears.
One resident of Prayeja Society summed up the frustration of many, stating, “There are 7-8 plants causing high pollution in our area. We have complained to the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, staged protests, and yet nothing has been done. The administration needs to take immediate action before more lives are lost.”
