Hey there, Aundh residents! Exciting news on the cycling front – Parisar recently organized a bicycle distribution programme for women in Kasturba Vasahat. The event was part of the Pune Cycle Partnership’s pilot programme, aiming to promote cycling in the city.
Thanks to generous donations from citizens of Pune, 14 women received refurbished bicycles from MLA Siddharth Shirole. Shirole highlighted the importance of providing women with mobility options and how it could spark a cycling movement in the community.
Mangala Mahajan, a Sanskrit Teacher and avid cyclist, shared her experiences of cycling in the city, inspiring others to take up cycling as well. One of the recipients, Usha Umap, expressed her gratitude for the bicycle, stating that it would allow her to access job opportunities farther from her home.
The Comprehensive Bicycle Plan for Pune, established in 2016, includes measures such as cycle tracks and a public bicycle system to promote cycling. Parisar, with support from Praj Industries, has been implementing pilot interventions to promote cycling, including school sessions and cycle rides for citizens.
Despite these efforts, the bicycle plan has seen little implementation. Parisar and other organizations are calling on the PMC to establish an official Pune Cycle Partnership to scale up cycling initiatives in the city. Let’s pedal towards a more cycle-friendly Aundh!
