The Yerawada Central Jail is taking a step towards enhancing security within its premises by implementing a biometric gate system. This innovative project, the first of its kind in Maharashtra, aims to prevent inmate clashes by restricting movements between different barracks and circles.
With a current population of over 7,000 inmates, well above its intended capacity, Yerawada Central Jail has faced challenges in maintaining order and preventing conflicts among prisoners. To address this issue, the prison administration has decided to install biometric gate systems in all barracks, circles, and segregated cells.
The biometric gate system will require prisoners to authenticate their identity using thumbprints when entering or exiting designated areas. This will help in reducing unauthorized movements and minimizing the risk of violent incidents. In addition, a panic alarm button will be introduced to ensure prompt response to any disturbances within the facility.
By tracking attendance for both officers and staff, the biometric gate system will enhance overall security and accountability within Yerawada Central Jail. This proactive measure is expected to create a safer environment for both inmates and prison staff, ultimately reducing conflicts and promoting a more secure correctional facility.
