Hey folks, exciting news coming out of Katraj! The Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park and Wildlife Research Centre is gearing up to bring in some new additions to their animal family – zebras! Yep, you heard that right. The Pune Municipal Corporation is working on a plan to introduce these striped beauties to the zoo to attract more tourists.

But hold your horses (or zebras in this case), it’s not a done deal just yet. The PMC is currently in talks with an expert committee to assess the feasibility of bringing zebras to Pune. Once the trench work is completed, the Garden Department will present a proposal for zebra acquisition to Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale for approval.

To make sure the zebras feel right at home, the PMC is shelling out around Rs 1.5 crore for a specially designed trench spanning 5,000 square meters. And guess what? Pune is considered a perfect environment for zebras, so it’s looking promising for their arrival.

Initially, the plan was to bring zebras all the way from Africa. However, a contractor who bid for the project failed to meet international standards. Now, the PMC is looking towards Europe and Israel for their zebra sourcing. The goal is to bring in four zebras – two females and two males, all around three to four years old.

Exciting times ahead for the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park! Stay tuned for more updates on these new zebra residents. Who’s ready for a safari in Pune?
