Hey Pune peeps, looks like the Zika virus is making its mark in our city with a total of 47 cases reported so far. The Pune Municipal Corporation is urging everyone to be extra cautious and has already started taking measures to contain the spread.

Sad news though, two senior citizens recently lost their lives to the Zika virus. A committee from the Public Health Department is looking into the exact cause of their deaths. The Erandwane Ward Office area seems to be the hotspot with 11 cases reported there and unfortunately, the two deaths also occurred in the same area.

It seems like the victims had other health issues like heart and liver problems as well, so it’s still unclear if Zika was the primary cause of their deaths.

To protect yourself from the Zika virus, the Health Department has laid out some guidelines. Make sure to destroy all mosquito breeding sites near your house, keep your surroundings clean, and use mosquito nets. Pregnant women are particularly at risk, so they are being closely monitored.

Here are some tips to keep those pesky mosquitoes at bay: burn neem leaves, close your windows and doors in the evening, burn camphor at home, and apply a mixture of neem and coconut oil on your body to avoid mosquito bites. And if you have a fever for more than two days, it’s best to consult a doctor.

Stay safe, Pune!
