Pune has something to celebrate as the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC) achieved a major milestone in 2024. They facilitated a record-breaking 70 deceased organ donations, the highest annual total in their history. This surpasses the previous record of 63 donations set a few years back. Since their establishment in 2004, ZTCC Pune has coordinated a total of 557 organ donations, saving over 1,300 lives.

What’s particularly noteworthy about this achievement is the significant contribution of government hospitals. Seven organ donations were facilitated through public healthcare facilities, with Sassoon General Hospital and Command Hospital leading the way. This highlights the increasing commitment of public healthcare institutions towards organ donation.

Professionals from various sectors also played a crucial role in this achievement by pledging their organs. Media personnel, doctors, and pilots all stepped forward to donate, showcasing a strong sense of social responsibility and inspiring others to do the same.

ZTCC Pune has been at the forefront of organ transplantation efforts, introducing innovative initiatives like Green Corridors to ensure the swift transportation of organs. By the end of 2024, they had facilitated 175 such corridors, leading to timely transplants and saving numerous lives.

Dr. A.G. Huprikar, Chairman of ZTCC Pune, expressed gratitude to the medical professionals and coordinators whose hard work made this success possible. Their dedication to supporting donor families during difficult times has turned moments of sorrow into opportunities for hope.

Dr. Sheetal Mahajani, Secretary of ZTCC Pune, stressed the importance of continued public awareness to sustain this momentum. Organ donation is a selfless act that can truly transform lives, and the generosity of donors and their families is truly humbling.

Overall, ZTCC Pune’s achievement in 2024 sets a new benchmark for organ donation efforts in the region. It highlights the crucial role of collaboration between healthcare professionals, government institutions, and the community in making a real difference in people’s lives.
